Kites

Though the story of ‘Kites’ comes from old school (read: There’s nothing new about this plot), the modern day cinematography, choreography, direction and editing make this one worth a watch.

...is a business module for anyone wanting to invest in movies and hit the jackpot. Provided they also get their PR machinery in place, almost a year before the release.

It’s a passionately romantic pic, or at least hyped as one in ways that few films can live up to. The expression of that intense love, its most important element, is often lost in translation - what many might rightly perceive as lack of chemistry between the leading pair.

...has style, visuals and Hrithik Roshan as its trump cards, but its content leaves a lot to be desired.

...the film doesn’t become more than the sum of its parts because the second half is flat and in places, outright foolish.

...it's an ambitious, brave experiment that may not always work, but it tries. Which is more than what one can say about many films we've seen recently.

Kites’s essential flaw is the story unfolding at a pace that’s too relaxed. One is certain this would have been a far better film with snappier editing. But then how many films do you see where you can remember the characters long after the film is done?

Where's the chemistry? Where's the story? And where's the twist in the tale? Kites could have been that cross-over film that Bollywood has been dreaming about since long. Sadly, it flounders even before it can take off and soar....

Lovely locales are shot and edited beautifully and set to some very nice background music. But the story doesn't fly that high.

...is an engaging one time watch but it leaves you wanting more-that little extra something that you take home.

Hrithik Roshan’s 'Kites' may make his fans very happy by the way he has been presented in the film but those looking out for a never seen been before experience that was promised through its mega marketing blitzkrieg will be in for a small disappointment.

...requires a bit of patience. Watch it without any distractions and you might just about like it.

Despite its short length, the reason why Kites becomes dreary after a point is because of the irrational and sometimes illogical script.

...may not be a bad film, but it's the kind of film you don't care about much after having watched it.

Save yourself your multiplex money, fly a kite instead. Much more entertaining that.

...suffers from trying to cater to a diverse audience, Indian and international, which is the latest fad amongst the big boys of Bollywood. It’s a bit like eating makke ki roti with salsa, which may be novel, but is definitely not tasty.

...starts off well enough, but loses itself in a mess of superficiality, which would have been just fine if the film wasn't also masquerading as operatic drama.

...the plot is sufficiently interesting and complex, with a distinct darkness and a foreign flavour.

A cross-culture romance cum road movie is very easy on the eye, and very difficult to endure.

Character development is sacrificed for Hallmark moments between the leads, which are just about the only entertaining bits in the film.

A love story works if it can make the audience feel for the lovers. In Kites there is not an ounce of romance or passion. What is it that draws the two together? Where’s the pull, the tug? And what is it (family, caste, religion or their own inner demons) that keeps them apart? Nothing about the relationship is compelling enough.

The film has a clean, expensive, glossy look. It’s well shot and edited. But none of that matters, since the plot is so contrived and it’s hard to empathise with any character.
